6 principles of safe yoga practice at home from YTT India Rishikesh
Sometimes, we just want to be alone – spread the mat in our own living room, let the cat walk around us and tea on the table cool. However, there are a few rules to remember about the safe practice of yoga at home from YTT India Rishikesh.
We can’t always go to our favorite yoga studio. Sometimes, we just want to be alone – spread the mat in our own living room, let the cat walk around us and tea on the table cool. However, there are a few rules to remember about safe yoga practice at home – when you are out of the instructor’s protective eyesight.
1. Practice barefoot
For three reasons.
First of all: you need to feel good ground contact to achieve stability in asana.
Socks can cause slight displacement of the foot relative to the floor, which, unfortunately, destroys the sense of stability and can cause unbalance.
Secondly, there are receptors known in acupressure on the feet. The direct touch of the bare foot to the ground will stimulate these points so that, by the way, you will activate the areas responsible for the functioning of individual organs.
And finally, thirdly: this is tradition!

2. Exercise 2 hours after a light meal, 4 hours after a heavy meal
Pay attention to when and what you eat.
A large meal consumed before practice will cause great discomfort – you will feel heavy, and in positions with abdominal pressure and massaging internal organs you may simply be sick.
It is good to follow the rule: 2h after a light meal and 4 after a heavy meal, but a bit easier to implement the rule will also work out – 1.5h and 3h respectively.
Either way, it’s best to focus on light meals more often, and then it will be much easier for you to incorporate practice into the schedule of the day and in the long run you will feel fresh and light.
3. Put on a comfortable yoga outfit
There is nothing worse than clothes sticking into the body and it is then when you have already managed to relax and plunge into the asana.

This unnecessarily distracts and diverts attention from the heart of the matter.
The outfit should provide maximum comfort in any position, not restrict movement and allow free air flow.
Loose and stretch clothes will work, thanks to which they will be without unpleasant abrasions.

4. If you feel pain – exit the asana
Or follow the easier version.
Following the principle of ahimsa (non-harm – you can read more about cavities and niamas in the article here ), do not hurt yourself.
Stretching should be felt, but not enough to talk about pain. However, when the pain appears – just reduce the range of motion, leave the position and start from the beginning.
When you allow pain into your practice, instead of teaching the body to relax and strengthen it – you tense and weaken.
5. Don’t compare yourself with the instructor
Or with anyone else – your body is one of a kind and you may never do the splits because your physiology won’t let you.
But don’t break – just because you are not like your teacher does not mean that you will not learn to stand on your head or that you will not become a master of bends and turns! There are so many groups of positions that for sure at least one of them will be your specialty.
6. Safety before everything
Organize appropriate aids if you need them (you have specific health problems or a stiff body).
The mat is a matter of course, but to get into positions safely and healthily, sometimes you will need a yoga belt, block or blanket (you can easily replace them with ordinary items, e.g. a durable scarf, a pile of thick books).

Any asana can be safely done without or with accessories. The aids have the advantage of offering more options for deepening asana while maintaining safety.
Don’t be afraid to practice yoga at home alone – just follow a few rules!
